One Night at Snow Lake: A Solo Expedition on Biafo Hispar Glacier
Located in the deep heart of the Karakoram Range in Gilgit-Baltistan, Snow Lake is one of the most remote and breathtakingly beautiful places on earth. The glacial basin is referred to as Lukpe Lawo by the locals, and stretches 16 kilometers at nearly 5,000 meters. It’s a place of raw beauty pristine, untouched, and treacherously cold. Spending a night alone at Snow Lake was not just an adventure; it was a test of resilience and spirit.
As the sun began setting behind the jagged peaks, the temperature plunged rapidly, and the great width of Snow Lake was altered into a frozen, alien landscape. With no tent to hide me from it, I knew I had to put my instincts and skills to good use to survive the night. One thing I could do is dig a snow graveyard a trench in the snow to protect myself from that biting wind.
A Solo Expedition on Biafo Hispar Glacier
Armed with a light shovel, I started carving into that frozen surface. Each blow felt like a fight with an unforgiving chill, but the rhythmic thud of the shovel piercing through the snow sounds comfortingly familiar. Now that it was getting deeper and as walls rose above, there was a fragile comfort about the place. Shelter would have been no mean lifeline.
By the time the trench was finished, the sky had become a painting of stars. It was utterly spectacular-the light of the Milky Way which couldn’t be viewed in all the light polluted cities in the world down there. In my snow grave, with sleeping bag huddled up on me, I was insignificant and infinite under this cosmos.
And with a groan, beneath my feet, the glacier was shifting, reminding me that it was alive, from a time before time, and yet still living, cold seeping through layers, but peace in its solitude. No noise broke my silence, no distractions found their way; only wind whispers and sometimes the old ice creaking on.
As the night wore on, I began to reflect on how powerful nature is. Snow Lake was not a place; it was an experience, reminding me that this fragile, fleeting existence as a human being has such a small place in this world of timelessness through which glaciers run. And all alone in this frozen wasteland, I found deep bonding with the wild; a bond forged by this shared silence and raw beauty of the night.
The morning finally came, slowly. Its first rays painted the snow-covered peaks in gold and pink shades. The very cold air began to get slightly warmer, and beneath it, the white stretched out endlessly, gleaming against the rising sun. And out came I from the snow graveyard, stiff, cold, but alive- to meet the unmatched glory of glacial wilderness.
Spending a night alone at Snow Lake was more than just an adventure; it was a journey into the soul of nature and a test of my own resilience. This remote corner of the Karakoram Range, untouched and awe-inspiring, left an indelible mark on my spirit. Snow Lake is not a destination but a reminder of the raw, untamed beauty of our planet and the power of solitude in the heart of nature.
